In the 18th century, Western-style fountains were introduced to China. In 1747, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty built three major fountains, namely "Xie Qiqu", "Haiyantang" and "Da Shuifa", in the Western-style buildings of the Old Summer Palace. In the central pool of the "Grand Water Method", there are ten copper dogs, all shooting at the rapid current with their mouths, directly pointing at the copper deer, which is called "Hunting dogs chasing Deer".

In the "Haiyantang", there are statues of the "Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs" dressed in Arhat robes. Each zodiac sign can spray water to tell the time. This is a water-lifting machine operated by humans - the dragon-tail vehicle twists and spins to rise, forming high-level water. Controlled by the machine, the twelve zodiac signs spray water in sequence every hour (equivalent to two hours), and at noon, all twelve zodiac signs spray water simultaneously.
